Knossos Palace and Heraklion Town

Approximate Duration:
7 hours

Early Bird Fee: $189 Nonrefundable

Travel back to the year 1500 BC on an archaeological adventure to the ruins of Knossos. Once, the palatial grounds of King Minos, the site remained undiscovered until 1900 when Sir Arthur Evans first unearthed its three-story frescoed palace. Today, you can see the Small Palace, Royal Villa, and the House of Frescos that made up this royal setting destroyed thousands of years ago by the earthquakes and tidal waves from a volcanic eruption.

Located 2- 1/2 hours from port by coach, Knossos and the three-story frescoed Palace Complex of King Minos are testaments to the vibrancy of Minoan culture and the significance and splendor of its ancient court. Afterwards, enjoy 30 minutes free-time in Heraklion.

Highlights:
- Knossos: Glimpse an exquisite remnant of Minoan civilization, later destroyed by natural disaster, and rediscovered in 1878.
- Palace of Minos: Visit ruins and reconstructed segments of the legendary labyrinth of the Minotaur.

Kaiki Ride and Volcanic Hike

Approximate Duration:
3 hours

Early Bird Fee: $159 Nonrefundable

Sail to an active volcanic crater, see beautiful and fascinating volcanic rock formations, and enjoy a relaxing journey to Palea Kameni and Fira. On this adventure, you'll board a kaiki, a traditional Greek sailboat that will take you to several fascinating destinations. First, on the lava islet of Nea Kameni you'll enjoy a unique twenty minute walk to the summit and active crater of the volcano.

An eruption, believed to be the fall of Atlantis, blew away the island's middle, leaving a huge crater behind. As you walk along the remains of the island, you'll view one-of-a-kind lava formations and fragments. The view on top affords spectacular panoramas of the island and ocean below. Then, you'll sail to the thermal hot springs of Palea Kameni, known for its healing waters. After, sit back, relax, and bask in the sun under the sails as your kaiki makes its way to Fira.

NOTES:

Board a kaiki, a traditional wooden fishing boat, and sail to the foot of Santorini's famous volcano, Nea Kameni, for a brisk hike up to the crater. Santorini was a circular volcanic island before a massive eruption blew out its middle. The rush of water into the void created a tsunami, devastating Minoan Crete. The islands of Nea Kameni and nearby Palea Kameni, which take starring roles in your tour, emerged from the water after volcanic activity in 197 BC and 1707 AD. They are still active today. As you make your way up Nea Kameni, look for fragments of magma as well as volcanic rock formations. At the top, relax and enjoy the breathtaking view. Marvel at the contrast of the dark, ashen cliffs against the blue Aegean Sea, making for incredible photo opportunities. On the way back, sail toward the thermal springs at Palea Kameni, known for its medicinal properties.

Highlights:

-Enjoy a relaxing kaiki sail to the lava island of Nea Kameni.
-Take a twenty minute volcano walk to the active crater on Nea Kameni.
