Ecstasy of Zhikr: Open Doorway to the Divine
Zhikr is an ecstatic practice of the Sufi tradition. It means recollection, or rememberance of the Divine. There are as many forms of Zhikr as there are Sufi schools.  In the Arica Zhikr, we use rhythmic drumming and undulating rhythms to anchor the energetic breathing, singing, and dancing we do in a circle together.

The result of the exercise is fana, or absorption in the Divine.  We experience this together when the group is unified in heart, mind, and body –– which happens as soon as the music comes alive in us.

Peter Winchell was initiated into this practice in 1976, and plays all the instruments used in the ensemble. He is also a teacher and trainer of Dialogue facilitators.

Kirtan: Songs of Divine Joy

Kirtan, from the Hindu tradition, is an expression of Bhakti Yoga, or Yoga of Heart Devotion.   Chanting names of God uplifts the Spirit and expands consciousness. When we do this together, the results increase geometrically.

We start with simple toning, or chanting open vowel, easy for everyone to do.  This begins to open the throat chakra and exercise the breathing apparatus.  Vibrating different parts of the body brings greater energy and awareness to those parts, bringing a greater sense of well being.

We move to singing simple melodies, drawing onthe works of Krishna Das, Yogananda, and others.  An Arica exercise, Calling the Archangels, uses simple melodies to invoke the presence of these exalted beings.No prior experience required.
