HEIMAEY, Iceland

On Jan. 23, 1973, Heimaey's inhabitants woke up to an earthquake, plumes of ash, and lava flowing from the Eldfell volcano. Most residents evacuated, while a few defended the harbor by spraying ocean water on the hot molten lava. Half of the town was destroyed. The 1973 eruption is the focus of the fascinating Eldheimar museum; among the exhibits is a house engulfed in ash—as in Pompeii.

Djúpivogur village, which dates back to the Vikings, is located on Berufjörður. Its stunning landscapes, like the Hofellsjökull Glacier and Valley of Waterfalls, are shaped by glaciers and geothermal activity. The village is home to intriguing sites like Langabúð, a 1790 log cabin that houses artifacts related to Iceland’s long-held folk traditions. These include a belief in “hidden folk” who live in the ancient windswept landscapes of rock, glacier, and lava.

Cruising: BERUFJORDUR, Iceland

Majestic Berufjörður is the dramatic setting for many an Icelandic saga, not surprising given the magical quality of its ruggedly beautiful terrain, vegetation and wildlife.

KIRKWALL, Scotland

A key attraction is the wealth of prehistoric sites on the Orkney Islands, including standing stones, burial chambers, and even Stone Age settlements, such as Skara Brae, inhabited sometime around 3000 BC. In the island capital, Kirkwall, is the Cathedral of St. Magnus—one of two pre–Reformation cathedrals still largely intact in Scotland. The historic district includes the Earl's Palace, built for Earl Patrick Stewart, whose father was a bastard son of King James V and was executed in 1615 for treason.

INVERGORDON (Inverness), Scotland

Inverness is considered the Highland capital, which is the wildest, least trammeled region of the United Kingdom. Just outside Inverness is a trove of Scottish and Celtic history, myth and natural beauty amid unspoiled glens, mountains, lochs, rivers and more. Most famous among the attractions is the legendary Loch Ness Monster. The Invergordon Port is near charming villages such as Fortrose with its ancient cathedral ruins, and Rosemarkie, where the Groam House Museum displays remarkable prehistoric art of Scotland's aboriginals—the Picts.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The sights of old buildings, cobbled streets and the tower- and turret-dotted skyline lend fairy-tale charm to Copenhagen—this was, after all, the home of author Hans Christian Andersen. But this is a thoroughly modern city with international clout. It's easy to explore on foot or by excellent public transport, where everyone speaks perfect English, the food is fresh and innovative, and there’s plenty of locally brewed beer—which, of course, is best enjoyed sitting by the water on a sunny day.

Stay a few days to explore Denmark. Renewed and refreshed after our cruise, we say good-bye with experiences and friends to last a lifetime.
